Not far from the Sava River, in the southwest part of Zagreb, there is a spacious recreational area and a sports centre created especially so that Zagreb's residents and visitors can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Jarun Lake, which was a former channel of the Sava River, was redesigned to accommodate the 1987 University Games. Big and Small, the two Jarun lakes are anchored by six man made islands and 2500 meters of shingle beach. The lakes and beaches have facilities such as serviced WC's and showers. There are rescue teams, lifeguards and medical services onsite as well. The surrounding tranquil area of the lakes is apt for outdoor activities like walking, bicycling, jogging, roller-skating, etc. International rowing, canoeing and kayaking contests are regularly held at the 2250 metres long regatta path.

When visiting Zagreb in winter, skiing on the highest peak of Medvednica, Sljeme is the most thrilling experience that anyone can encounter. With floodlights installed and a cable car to take you to the top, the peak is accessible even at nighttimes. Generally, the place gets crowded during weekends.
